The advent of telehealth applications and remote patient monitoring has led to an increasing need for continuous signal quality monitoring to ensure high diagnostic accuracy of the recordings. Cardiovascular diseases often manifest electrophysiological anomalies, therefore the electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most used signals for diagnostic applications. Various types of noise and artifacts are not uncommon in ECG recordings and assessing the quality of the signal is essential prior to any clinical interpretation. In this study, a dynamic signal quality index (dSQI) is introduced using a new time-frequency template-based approach.

A decrease in baroreflex sensitivity with aging is hypothesized to represent a contributing causal factor in the etiology of primary hypertension. The cross sectional study compared 60 subjects who suffered strokes, to 60 control subjects, collecting the following data for each patient across multiple days: transcranial doppler of cerebral arteries, 24-h blood pressure numerics, high resolution waveforms (ECG, blood pressure, CO2 and respiration) during various movement tasks, 24-h ECG, EMG, and accelerometer recordings, and gait pressure recordings during a walking test.

The 2018 PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge is now open. This year's Challenge, "You Snooze, You Win", is focused on the problem of automatically detecting disturbances in a patient's sleep. Given a collection of physiological signals recorded during sleep, including EEG, ECG, and EMG, participants are invited to develop an algorithm to automatically identify arousal events, and will be scored based on how well their algorithm's results agree with those of expert human annotators. The Concept Unique Identifier (CUI)-less database contains a corpus of "CUI-less" concepts taken from the SemEval2015 Task 14 that have been assigned CUIs. The annotation process allows assignment of CUIS from any Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) semantic group and compositional normalization using more than one CUI per disease entity. Concepts are mapped to SNOMED CT as represented in the September 2016 version found in Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) 2016AB.

Heart rate fragmentation is a new approach to conceptualizing and measuring heart rate dynamics. The dataset contains keystroke logs collected from over 200 subjects, with and without Parkinson's Disease (PD), as they typed normally on their own computer (without any supervision) over a period of weeks or months (having initially installed a custom keystroke recording app, Tappy). This dataset has been collected and analyzed in order to indicate that the routine interaction with computer keyboards can be used to detect changes in the characteristics of finger movement in the early stages of PD.

The MIMIC-III Waveform Database has been released, containing our largest collection to date of physiologic signals collected by bedside patient monitors in adult and neonatal intensive care units. Over 44,000 recordings have been added to the existing MIMIC-II Waveform Database, for a total of over 67,000 recordings and over three million hours of waveform data. For about one third of the database (about 22,000 recordings from 10,000 patients), extensive clinical information is also available to qualified researchers via the MIMIC-III Clinical Database.

The database contains non-EEG physiological signals collected at Quality of Life Laboratory at University of Texas at Dallas, used to infer the neurological status of 20 healthy subjects. The Video Pulse Signals in Stationary and Motion Conditions dataset contains 40 pulse signal recordings obtained from 15 healthy volunteers (12 men and 3 women between 23 and 35 years). For each subject, there is a simultaneous face video recording, and a finger pulse recording reference system, in a sitting position. The video pulse signals were obtained from videos recorded by two camera models at 15 and 60 frames per second, which were then further processed. The reference finger pulse sensor had a sampling frequency of 1 kHz.

We are excited to announce the opening of the annual PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge for 2017: AF Classification from a short single lead ECG recording. A database of over 10,000 ECG recordings is being made freely available exclusively for this competition by AliveCor, and represent a serendipitous sample of patient-initiated recordings of one minute or less. They have all been labeled for rhythm by hand into one of four categories: Normal, Atrial Fibrillation, Other Rhythm or Too Noisy to Process. We challenge the public to develop the most accurate classifier of these data into these four categories. As usual, a portion of these data have been hidden from the public to allow us to objectively assess your algorithms. The STAFF-III database was acquired during 1995-96 at Charleston Area Medical Center (WV, USA) where single prolonged balloon inflation had been introduced to achieve optimal results of percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography (PTCA) procedures, replacing the typical series of brief inflations. The database consists of standard 12-lead ECG recordings from 104 patients. The CHARIS database contains multi-channel recordings of ECG, arterial blood pressure (ABP), and intracranial pressure (ICP) of patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The data is contributed by members of the CHARIS project which aims to systematize the analysis of relevant physiological signals, and create data-driven algorithms to search for potential predictors of acute clinical events for patients with acute brain injury. The Logistic Regression HSMM based Heart Sound Segmentation package contains MATLAB code used to segment phonocardiogram (PCG) recordings, and detect the four states of the heart cycle. This state of the art segmentation code by Springer is used in the sample entry of the 2016 PhysioNet/CinC Challenge. The newly contributed software for Modeling of Heart Rate Variability Including the Effect of Sleep Stages implements a model for simulating healthy nighttime heart rate variability based on the properties of sleep observed in real data. Also included are 20 RR time series generated by the model. The model was first proposed in “Modeling heart rate variability including the effect of sleep stages,” by Soliński et al in CHAOS 26, 023101 (2016).

The kl-single-uncentralized subdirectory contains another new set of single lead KL basis functions for the ST segments, and their subsequent normalized and non-normalized KL coefficients. The set of clean heart beats from which the ST segments are extracted slightly differ from those of the previously derived 2011 KL dataset. More importantly, this time the KL coefficients are not centralized by their mean values.

ECG-kit This toolbox is a collection of MATLAB tools that Mariano Llamedo Soria used, adapted or developed during his PhD and post-doc work with the Besicos group at University of Zaragoza, Spain and at the National Technological University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The main feature of this toolbox is that it allows the use of several popular algorithms for ECG processing, including: Algorithms from Physionet’s WFDB software package; QRS detectors, such as gqrs, wqrs, wavedet, ecgpuwave, Pan & Tompkins, EP limited; Wavelet-based ECG delineator; Pulse wave detectors as wabp and wavePPG; and a2hbc and EP limited heartbeat classifiers.

Smart Health for Assessing the Risk of Events via ECG (SHAREE database). The SHAREE database was developed in order to investigate the possibility of identifying hypertensive subjects at higher risk to develop vascular events based on Heart Rate Variability analysis. The database was created by Paolo Melillo, Raffaele Izzo, Ada Orrico, Paolo Scala, Marcella Attanasio, Marco Mirra, Nicola De Luca, and Leandro Pecchia as part of the “Smart Health and Artificial intelligence for Risk Estimation” (SHARE) project, which seeks ways to prevent cardiovascular events and falls in people over 65.

Icelandic 16-electrode Electrohysterogram Database (EHGDB). A new dataset of 122 16-electrode EHG recordings performed on 45 pregnant Icelandic women has been published in PhysioBank. The data was contributed by Ásgeir Alexandersson, who performed the recordings at Akureyri Primary Health Care Centre, Akureyri Hospital and Landspitali University Hospital. A detailed description of the database has been published in Nature's new journal Scientific Data 2, Article number: 150017 (2015).

The PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge 2015 is now open. This year's challenge is 'Reducing False Arrhythmia Alarms in the ICU'. False alarms in the ICU can lead to a disruption of care, impacting both the patient and the clinical staff through noise disturbances, desensitization to warnings and slowing of response times, leading to decreased quality of care. To address this issue, competitors are challenged to devise a method of processing all the available data to reduce false alarms with minimal or no effect on true (vital) alarms.

Two new software packages have been added to PhysioToolkit! The first package, D3Maps, is a tool for visualizing the behavior of complex systems by means of the dynamical density delay mapping technique. This package was developed at the Wyss Institute by A. Burykin, L. Citi, M.D. Costa and A.L. Goldberger. The second software package, Multiscale Multifractal Analysis, is a time series analysis method designed to describe scaling properties of fluctuations within a signal. The software package was contributed by Jan Gierałtowski from Warsaw University of Technology.

Combined measurement of ECG, Breathing, and Seismocardiograms Database (CEBSDB). A dataset of 60 records from 20 volunteers has been contributed to PhysioBank by Miguel Angel Garcia Gonzalez and Ariadna Argelagos Palou from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya. Each record contains two ECGs, a respiration, and a seismocardiogram signals. The database was designed to check if errors in RR series are influenced by breathing, and if there is a significant variability in RR series estimated from ECGs versus seismocardiograms.

Two new software packages have been added to the PhysioTookit library. FECGSyn is a new Foetal ECG Waveform Generator contributed by Joachim Behar and Gari Clifford's group at University of Oxford. The second package, the Random Search Toolbox, is a MATLAB toolbox for selecting model hyper-parameters via random search, also contributed by Joachim Behar and Gari Clifford's group.

Two upcoming events this September at MIT will be of interest to PhysioNet users. The first is the International Critical Care Data Mining Marathon, a weekend event (5-7 September 2014). The International Critical Care Data Mining Marathon will bring together teams of engineers and clinicians to develop tools and crowd-source knowledge in clinical data, with a hands-on data mining workshop using the MIMIC II Database. The second event is the 2014 Computing in Cardiology conference held from September 7-10, 2014 at Cambridge, Massachusetts. Computing in Cardiology is an international scientific conference that has been held annually since 1974 and hosting PhysioNet Challenges since 2000. This conference provides a forum for scientists and professionals from the fields of medicine, physics, engineering and computer science to discuss their current research in topics pertaining to computing in clinical cardiology and cardiovascular physiology.

PhysioNet users with an interest in sleep physiology now have access to the web site of the National Sleep Research Resource (NSRR), which hosts large annotated collections of EDF polysomnograms and related clinical data elements from well-characterized research cohorts and clinical trials. The first data set available includes over 8,000 studies from exams 1 and 2 of the Sleep Heart Health Study, with scheduled new data releases every quarter from additional data sets. NSRR also provides open-source software for viewing and analyzing these data.

A set of 310 ECGs from 90 volunteers has been created and contributed to PhysioBank by Tatiana Lugovaya, who used the data in her master's thesis on the topic of biometric human identification using the ECG. An excellent summary of this thesis, with a discussion of the challenges in using ECGs as biometrics, and a comparison of the author's methods and results with those of three previous studies, is also available.

This dataset, created and contributed by Luca Citi, Riccardo Poli, and Caterina Cinel, was generated as part of a study aimed at identifying the factors limiting the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on event-related potentials (ERPs), in order to improve the transfer rate and the usability of these interfaces. Twenty recordings of each of 10 participants include annotated 64-channel EEGs and 4-channel EOGs, generated while the participants focused on specified target characters displayed by a traditional matrix speller.

This data collection, contributed to PhysioBank by Kevin Sweeney and colleagues at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth, contains examples of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings that have been created for evaluating artifact removal methods. In each such recording, one or two pairs of similar physiological signals have been acquired from transducers in close proximity. One signal of each pair is contaminated by motion artifact, documented in each case by simultaneously recorded outputs of 3-axis accelerometers affixed to each transducer.

This collection of 552 CTGs from the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague and the University Hospital in Brno (UHB) was carefully selected from 9164 recordings recently collected at UHB. Each recording is up to 90 minutes long, and includes a fetal heart rate time series, a uterine contraction signal, and maternal, delivery, and fetal clinical details.

Two upcoming events at MIT will be of interest to users of the MIMIC II Databases. The first is the Critical Data Marathon, a weekend event (3-5 January 2014) run in partnership with Sana Mobile and H@cking Medicine. The Critical Data Marathon will bring together teams of engineers and clinicians to develop tools and crowd-source knowledge and insight in clinical data, with a hands-on data mining workshop using the MIMIC II Clinical Database. The second event is a conference, Critical Data, on 7 January 2014, which aims to bring together clinicians, clinical researchers, and data scientists to discusss the opportunities and challenges surrounding meaningful reuse of clinical data. Remote participation is possible for those unable to attend these events at MIT.

A greatly expanded version of the Sleep-EDF Database, of which a small subset was previously contributed in 2002, is now available in PhysioBank. The database now includes 61 full-night polysomnograms of healthy subjects and of subjects with mild difficulty falling asleep, with accompanying expert annotations of sleep stages.

Also available are the slides presented by the 28 participants who discussed their work during sessions dedicated to the Challenge at Computing in Cardiology 2013 in Zaragoza, Spain.

The WFDB Toolbox for MATLAB is a collection of MATLAB functions for reading, writing, and manipulating (processing) PhysioBank data, implemented as system calls to WFDB Software Package applications through Java and MATLAB wrappers. A new implementation of the toolbox provides faster operation and a significantly expanded set of functions.

This year's PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge invites participants to develop software capable of detecting fetal QRS complexes in multichannel noninvasive ECG recordings, making accurate estimates of fetal heart rate, RR intervals, and QT intervals. An annotated training set of 25 one-minute recordings is available now; a sample entry, software for scoring, and test recordings will be available shortly.

Open access is now available for the first time to a set of 4000 patient records included in the MIMIC II Clinical Database Demo, a downloadable disk image that can be run within a virtual machine or from a bootable USB flash drive or DVD. Since all of the required software, including the operating system, is pre-installed and configured, it is an ideal way to begin exploring the MIMIC II Clinical Database (currently including more than 32,000 patient records) on a spare PC or Intel Mac with an absolute minimum of setup time.

PhysioBank has received a contribution of five-minute multichannel fetal ECG recordings, with cardiologist-verified annotations of all fetal heart beats, from five women in labor, from the Medical University of Silesia, Poland. Each record of the Abdominal and Direct Fetal ECG Database includes four signals from the maternal abdomen and a simultaneously recorded reference direct fetal ECG from the fetal scalp; all signals are sampled at 1 KHz with 16-bit resolution.

The creators of the OB-1 Database of fetal ECGs seek collaborators in their PhysioNetWorks project to complete the database and to use it to investigate improved diagnoses of fetal distress. A sample recording from the database is now available in PhysioBank, while construction of the remainder (including more than 100 additional recordings, with detailed accompanying clinical information) is in progress on PhysioNetWorks.

The Cyclic Alternating Pattern (CAP) is a periodic EEG activity occurring during NREM sleep, and abnormal amounts of CAP are associated with a variety of sleep-related disorders. The CAP Sleep Database is a collection of 108 polysomnographic recordings from the Sleep Disorders Center of the Ospedale Maggiore of Parma, Italy. Each record includes 3 or more EEG signals together with EOG, chin and tibial EMG, airflow, respiratory effort, SaO2, and ECG signals, and reference sleep stage and CAP annotations, This database is intended to provide a useful number of carefully annotated examples of CAP in a representative variety of pathophysiologic contexts, for development and evaluation of automated CAP analyzers, as well as to support basic studies of the dynamics of CAP.

A complete set of over 9 million reference beat and rhythm annotations for the Long-Term AF Database has been contributed by MEDICALgorithmics (Warsaw, Poland). The Long-Term AF Database, a collection of 84 long-term ECG recordings (typically 24 to 25 hours each) of subjects with paroxysmal or sustained atrial fibrillation, was contributed to PhysioBank in 2008 by Steven Swiryn and his colleagues at Northwestern University. Michael Tadeusiak of MEDICALgorithmics coordinated the annotation development as a PhysioNetWorks project.

The search engine is integrated with the PhysioBank ATM, so that records within search results can be examined individually and marked for further study if desired. The pbsearch software package includes sources for the PhysioBank Record Search web client, the server, a command-line client, and a set of plugins.

The first release of the PhysioBank Index contains essential information about all of the more than 36,000 records that can be viewed using the PhysioBank ATM. A web-based tool for searching the index is under development (14 March update: see above). Users who are comfortable using standard command-line tools can use them now, to search the index for records with desired characteristics. Our new tutorial provides guidance and examples.
Update (14 March): The pbindex software package is now available; it contains the sources for the software that generates the PhysioBank Index.

The MGH/MF Waveform Database Patient Guide is now available. It provides additional information for each recording in the database, including (as available) age, sex, diagnoses, pertinent medical history, ECG interpretation, ventilation, a timeline of events that occurred during the recording, and additional clinical observations.

Version 3 of the MIMIC II Waveform Database has been publicly released. Version 3 contains 21,422 patient records and is more than 4 times the size of version 2. Using enhanced data recovery techniques, the original raw data dumps have been reprocessed to extract many records that were previously unreadable, and additional raw data dumps collected since the previous release were also processed to obtain many more records.

Also available to qualified investigators via PhysioNetWorks is version 2.6 of the companion MIMIC II Clinical Database, containing data for 32,536 subjects (5880 new since version 2.5) and additional data types (including demographics, procedure (CPT) codes, diagnosis-related groups (DRG codes), Elixhauser comorbidity scores, microbiology test results, and LOINC coding for lab tests).

The Term-Preterm EHG Database, a collection of electrohysterogram (EHG: uterine EMG) recordings obtained at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana from 300 pregnant women, has been contributed to PhysioBank and is now available. The collection includes recordings from 262 women who had full-term pregnancies and 38 whose pregnancies ended prematurely; 162 of the recordings were made before the 26th week of gestation, and 138 later.

The CHB-MIT Scalp EEG Database, a collection of EEG recordings of 22 pediatric subjects with intractable seizures, is now available. Subjects were monitored for up to several days following withdrawal of anti-seizure medication to characterize their seizures and assess their candidacy for surgical intervention. In all, the onsets and ends of 182 seizures are annotated.

The entire European ST-T Database, a landmark set of expert-annotated recordings for study of the ECG manifestation of myocardial ischemia and for development and evaluation of methods for quantifying ST and T changes in the ECG, is now available on PhysioNet. Roughly half of the database was previously contributed to PhysioNet in September, 2000; this new contribution makes the entire database available for free use by researchers for the first time.

Over 1300 records have been added to the MIMIC II Waveform Database, bringing the total to over 4000 multi-parameter records from ICU patients, each typically several days in length, with many that are much longer. Replacing the original PhysioBank web services introduced in 2000, the ATM offers a variety of tools for visualizing PhysioBank data and converting them to text, EDF, or .mat files, and more.

The WFDB Software Package, versions 10.4.17 and later, includes wfdb2mat, a program that converts all or any desired portion of the signals in any PhysioBank or compatible record to a .mat file that can be read by Matlab or Octave. If the original signal files have not been downloaded from PhysioNet, wfdb2mat can read them directly from the PhysioNet server. The .mat files generated by wfdb2mat are also directly readable by dozens of other applications in the WFDB Software Package, including WAVE.

The 10th annual PhysioNet/Computers in Cardiology Challenge is underway. Participants are invited to identify which ICU patients are likely to experience sudden and severe drops in blood pressure. Successful prediction of these acute hypotensive events may lead to improved care and survival of patients at risk. Heart Rate Variability Analysis with the HRV Toolkit: Basic Time and Frequency Domain Measures is a new tutorial that describes how to use the HRV toolkit (an accompanying software package created for PhysioNet by Joe Mietus) to select and prepare time series of inter-beat intervals and to calculate measurements of the basic time- and frequency-domain HRV statistics that are widely used in the literature. Particular attention is given to techniques for identifying and dealing with outliers, in order to permit reliable determination of measurements.

A collection of multiparameter recordings created to study stress recognition in automobile drivers has been contributed to PhysioNet. The database contains recordings from healthy volunteers taken while they were driving on a prescribed route including city streets and highways in and around Boston. Signals recorded include ECG, EMG, GSR, and respiration.

The St. Petersburg Institute of Cardiological Technics 12-lead Arrhythmia Database has been contributed to PhysioNet by its creators. It consists of 75 half-hour recordings extracted from 32 Holter records from patients undergoing tests for coronary artery disease, with reference annotation files containing over 175,000 beat annotations in all.

An extensive comparison of eleven previously described algorithms for cardiac output estimation from arterial blood pressure waveforms has been contributed to PhysioNet. The package includes implementations of each algorithm in Matlab, a selection of records from the MIMIC II database that contain ABP waveforms and "gold standard" thermodilution cardiac output measurements, and a comprehensive discussion of calibration techniques, evaluation methods, and rankings of the algorithms.

The Spontaneous Ventricular Tachyarrhythmia Database (Version 1.0 from Medtronic, Inc.) contains 135 pairs of RR interval time series, recorded by implanted cardioverter defibrillators in 78 subjects. One series of each pair includes a spontaneous episode of ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, and the other is a sample of the intrinsic (usually sinus) rhythm.

CVSim can be launched directly from a web browser with no installation required in most cases.

The eighth annual PhysioNet/Computers in Cardiology Challenge has begun. This year's Challenge embraces the disciplines of both electrocardiography and (for the first time) imaging. Participants will estimate the location and extent of infarcts using ECG maps, and their estimates will be evaluated using "gold standard" measurements of gadolinium-enhanced MRI data.

The PhysioNet/Computers in Cardiology Challenge 2006 attracted 41 participants, 19 of whom presented papers describing their methods for QT interval measurement at CinC in Valencia. The best score achieved by a manually reviewed entry was 6.67 ms (raw score: 6.65 ms, yield: 0.998), submitted by Mariano Llamedo Soria of the Universidad Tecnologica Nacional FRBA, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In all, seven entries in division 1 received scores below 20 ms. The best score achieved by an automated method was 16.34 ms (raw score: 15.53 ms, yield: 0.951), submitted by Dieter Hayn of ARC Seibersdorf Research GmbH, Graz, Austria. This entry achieved seventh place overall. The best score achieved by an open source automated method was 17.33 ms (raw score: 17.30 ms, yield: 0.998), by Yuriy Chesnokov of the Unilever Centre for Molecular Science Informatics, Cambridge University. This entry achieved ninth place overall, and second among all automated methods. In all, three entrants in divisions 2 and 3 earned scores below 20 ms, and six more received scores below 30 ms. An unofficial entry formed by combining the results of the three top entries in each of divisions 2 and 3 achieved a score of 10.93 ms (raw score: 10.39 ms, yield 0.951).

The package provides access to the WFDB subroutine library, which also supports software written in C, C++, and Fortran, as well as Matlab (via the WFDB_tools package).

PhysioToolkit's most capable tool for viewing, analyzing, and annotating physiologic signals, WAVE, is now available for MS-Windows. WAVE was developed under SunOS and GNU/Linux, and it also runs under Solaris, FreeBSD, and Mac OS X. A single set of WAVE sources supports all of these platforms, so that WAVE behaves identically on any of them.

New in PhysioBank is the PTB Diagnostic ECG Database, a collection of 549 high-resolution 15-lead ECGs (12 standard leads together with Frank XYZ leads), including clinical summaries for each record. The CAST RR Interval Sub-Study Database has been contributed to PhysioBank. The database contains a set of beat annotation files (about 24 hours each) from 809 subjects enrolled in the Cardiac ArrhythmiaSuppression Trial (CAST), a landmark NHLBI-sponsored study. For 734 subjects, separate baseline (pre-treatment) and on-therapy records are available; the database consists of 1543 records in all, including roughly 150 million RR interval measurements.

PhysioNet has inaugurated the Sudden Cardiac Death Holter Database. This is a collection of long-term ECG recordings of patients who experienced sudden cardiac death during the recordings. Half-hour excerpts of these recordings have been (and remain) available as the MIT-BIH Malignant Ventricular Ectopy Database. The new database includes a set of unaudited beat annotation files and an incomplete set of audited annotation files. Interested researchers are invited to contribute additional recordings and to join in the effort to complete a thorough and rigorously reviewed set of reference-quality annotation files for these unique recordings.

The main PhysioNet server was off-line for about 45 minutes on 3 May during a power outage that affected a large portion of the city of Cambridge, including the MIT campus. Our backup power kept the server available for the first 25 minutes of the outage, which was the first to cause an interruption since PhysioNet was inaugurated almost 5 years ago. If you ever find that you can't reach PhysioNet, use Google to search for "physionet mirrors".

A beta release of the WFDB_tools package is now available for testing. This package allows Matlab R13 users to use the WFDB library to read and write digitized signals and annotations such as those available from PhysioBank. The WFDB_tools functions are wrappers for the WFDB library, so that Matlab users can access the full range of capabilities offered by current and future versions of the WFDB library, including transparent access to data in a large and growing number of formats, whether stored locally or on remote web servers. The package was written and contributed by Jonas Carlson. It has been tested successfully under GNU/Linux and MS-Windows, and it should be portable to MacOS X and other platforms supported by Matlab R13.

The NHLBI-sponsored multi-center Sleep Heart Health Study has contributed the first of a planned set of 1000 overnight polysomnograms to PhysioBank. The study has investigated the relationship between sleep disordered breathing and cardiovascular disease since 1995. The data include EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, nasal airflow and respiratory effort signals, SaO2 and heart rate measurements, and annotated sleep stages, respiratory events, EEG arousals, and more.

Robert Tratnig and Klaus Rheinberger have contributed a Matlab viewer that reads and displays many PhysioBank records, the latest in a collection of software for Matlab and Octave contributed by PhysioNet users.

An effort is now underway to create a set of Matlab wrappers for the WFDB library. Such wrappers would allow Matlab applications to make use of the full range of capabilities offered by the WFDB library, including direct access to records stored on PhysioNet and other web servers in addition to local disk files, support for a wide and growing variety of data formats using a uniform API, resampling on-the-fly, and much more. The Intracardiac Atrial Fibrillation Database is a new collection of high-resolution recordings from eight subjects in atrial fibrillation or flutter. Each recording includes three surface ECG signals and five intracardiac signals, all simultaneously recorded. These are the first freely available recordings of their type.

Software for measuring pNNx, a family of time-domain heart rate variability statistics of which the widely-used pNN50 is a member, has been contributed to PhysioToolkit. The study that introduced pNNx made use of several PhysioBank databases as well as additional data that have also been contributed to PhysioBank, including the Congestive Heart Failure RR Interval Database, the Normal Sinus Rhythm RR Interval Database, and the remainder of the Fantasia Database (see the news item for 2 March below).

The Congestive Heart Failure RR Interval Database includes beat annotations (about 24 hours each, no ECGs) for 29 subjects with congestive heart failure (NYHA classes 1, 2, and 3).

The Normal Sinus Rhythm RR Interval Database also includes 24-hour beat annotation files for 54 subjects in normal sinus rhythm.

A subset of data from the Fantasia Database has been available here for several years; the remainder of the database is now available. It consists of ECG and respiration recordings, with beat annotations, from 20 young and 20 elderly subjects, all rigorously screened as healthy, in sinus rhythm during a resting state (two hours each). Half of the recordings also include (uncalibrated) continuous noninvasive blood pressure signals.

The Sleep-EDF Database is a collection of sleep recordings from healthy subjects contributed to PhysioBank by Bob Kemp. These recordings are presented in European Data Format (EDF), a standard for archiving and exchanging polysomnographic recordings. It's easy to read and write EDF files using the format converters available in PhysioToolkit.

Software for locating waveform boundaries in the ECG (i.e., the beginnings, peaks, and ends of P, QRS, and T waves) has been contributed to PhysioNet. The software can be used to analyze either annotated or unannotated recordings (it includes an implementation of the Pan-Tompkins QRS detection algorithm).

A new tutorial, Morphology Representation Using Principal Components, presents practical methods and sample code for deriving noise-tolerant measurements of waveform shape, using the QRS complex of the ECG as an example.

The latest addition to PhysioNet's growing collection of tutorials is Exploring Patterns in Nature, a set of interactive tutorials focussing on emergent phenomena (random behavior at the smallest scales leading to patterns at larger scales). Subjects include fractal dimension, measuring randomness, physical and chemical branching structures, biological branching patterns, diffusion, percolation, and motion on a fractal.

RCVSIM is an open-source cardiovascular simulator for research, designed for compatibility with PhysioBank data formats and PhysioToolkit analysis software. The sources are extensively commented to facilitate modifications and extensions to suit the needs of specific research projects, and a comprehensive user's guide is available.

A new collection of Long-term Recordings of Gait Dynamics: Unconstrained and Metronomic Walking has been added to PhysioBank. Sixty hours of stride interval time series from ten healthy volunteers exhibit long-range correlations in unconstrained walking and anti-correlations during metronomic walking.

GTKWave is a reimplementation of the original WAVE application for viewing, analyzing, and annotating PhysioBank recordings, with a modern GUI that is portable between Unix and MS-Windows. A beta version of GTKWave is now available, including sources, Linux binaries, and MS-Windows binaries. Please try it out!

PhysioNet and Computers in Cardiology 2001 challenge you to develop and evaluate a method for doing so, in CinC Challenge 2001, the second in an annual series of open contests aimed at catalyzing research, friendly competition, and wide-ranging collaboration around this clinically important problem. Prizes will be awarded to the most successful participants. Update (21 September): The challenge has ended, and no additional entries will be accepted.. A database of Gait Dynamics in Neuro-Degenerative Disease has been added to PhysioBank. This database includes recordings of gait from subjects with Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and healthy controls.

Five complete (21 to 24 hour) records from the Long-Term ST Database have been contributed to PhysioBank, together with a pair of papers describing the database [1, 2]. This six-year multinational project is nearing completion. These are the first recordings to be made available from this database.

The BIDMC Congestive Heart Failure Database has been added to PhysioBank. This database includes fifteen 20-hour recordings of patients with severe heart failure (NYHA class 3-4).

The article highlights the highly successful Computers in Cardiology Challenge 2000, which has stimulated efforts by researchers worldwide to develop methods for detecting and quantifying sleep apnea using the ECG only, and to evaluate these methods using a large database available from PhysioBank.

The master PhysioNet web server at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts has been visited from over 10,000 different locations in about 70 countries around the world during its first 10 months of operation. During that period it has delivered more than 100 gigabytes of data (not including data transmitted to or by the PhysioNet mirrors).

Precompiled binaries (ready-to-run versions) of the WFDB Software Package for 32-bit MS-Windows (95/98/NT/2000) and Solaris now include NETFILES support (built-in HTTP and FTP client support, making it possible to view and analyze PhysioBank recordings without downloading them to local storage, and without a web browser). This feature has been available under Linux since last September.

Precompiled binaries without NETFILES support are now available for HP-UX as well.

The WFDB Software Package is now available in RPM form for easy installation under Linux.

Binary annotation and signal files from PhysioBank can now be converted to text format from your web browser. The conversions are performed using rdann and rdsamp , two utilities from the WFDB software package that can also be downloaded and run on your own computer for greater flexibility.

The QT Database is now on-line, with over 100 fifteen-minute two-lead ECG recordings (many excerpted from other databases), with onset, peak, and end markers for P, QRS, T, and (where present) U waves of from 30 to 50 selected beats in each recording.

The PhysioNet Publications pages have been started, with the contribution of a paper on human gait maturation together with the raw data on which the study was based (now a Class 2 database available from the PhysioBank on-line archives). Look for more papers and data in the coming weeks and months. If you have data or software that may be of interest to other users of PhysioNet, and a related publication, please consider contributing a copy of your publication and its supporting data or software to the Publications pages. We also encourage contributions of publications that make use of existing PhysioBank data or PhysioTools software. The first of a planned series of tutorials is now available. These tutorials emphasize hands-on exploration of the data and software available via PhysioNet. The first tutorial introduces detrended fluctuation analysis and approximate entropy in the context of studying changes in gait and heart rate dynamics with age and disease. Your feedback is welcome!
